Strike, Strike, and More Strike......

Since its really late, and I'm way too lazy, I'm not posting the links to thee latest strike info.

It's all on Playbill.com, and places like that.

-In the mean time, for the sake of coolness, here's a list of some really good cast recordings you should get, and why;

Sweeney Todd (2005 Revival): I've always debated with myself whether reduced orchestrations are better than full ones. In some cases, Sunday in the Park with George, a large orchestra sounds beautiful. A great example of how a reduced orchestra sounds better than the original is the 2005 Tony winning Production of Sweeney Todd. As well as having an amazing cast, the Tony winning orchestrations sound fantastic!!!

Hello Again: If it weren't for Ol' JRB, Michael John Lachiusa would be the heir to the Sondheim Throne. Of all the shows that Lachiusa has written music for, this score always creeps the hell out of me, in a good way. This tale of sex throughout the twentieth century contains one of the most beautiful scores not written for the Broadway stage.

In Trousers: If there was a contest for "Craziest Lyrics by a Theatrical Composer," William Finn would win hands down. This show is the predecessor to the two Falsettos shows, that eventually transferred to Broadway, and won Finn two Tonys. With extremely catchy music, and screwed-up-as-hell lyrics, In Trousers is sure to drive you up the wall.

Floyd Collins: Just so you all know, I'm not really a fan of the "Golden Age" Composers, Rodgers & Hammerstein, Lerner and Loewe, those guys. In fact, I think that the "New Age" Composers are even better then those old timers, no disrespect. Adam Guettel, who coincidentally is Richard Rodgers' grandson, gives us a lush beautiful score here, with Floyd Collins, which can be described as "Sondheim meets Bluegrass."

Both Recordings of Assassins: Assassins is probably in my Top 10 of Best Sondheim Scores, which I'll blog about in the near future. It is an extremely politically-incorrect depiction of the various Presidential Assassins. Now, the original 1991 Cast recording has "kinda" better orchestrations, while the 2004 "revival" Cast Recording has a much better cast, including Michael Cerveris, and Marc Kudisch, aka The Greastest B'Way Actor of All Time.

Caroline, Or Change: Thank G-d this whole show has been preserved for future generations to hear the most thrilling Tony-losing score of all time!! Unfortunately, I didn't see this most probably amazing show, but, a boy can dream......

Jerry Springer: The Opera: This doesn't even need an explanation. Get it NOW!!!!

Adios, and Happy Turkey Day!!
