So, sorry about the extremely long absence from the blogosphere. Because I was attending a Summer Performing Arts program, known as....

STAGEDOOR MANOR!

Hellz yeah! Not only that, I'm being published!

See they had this thing called Dramafest, where every session, they picked five plays and performed them, and then the plays will be published later this year. Well, I h-was one of the five for the second session!

Pretty much awesomeness right there.

Missed me? Yeah, I thought so.

FIRST MOVIE REVIEW- You Don't Mess with the Zohan

All right everybody, brace yourselves. This movie is actually GOOD! Maybe it's just because I'm Jewish, maybe it's because I love Adam Sandler "not" being Adam Sandler. Either way, I found this movie to be quite hilarious in it's delivery of hummus jokes, penis jokes, and Israeli jokes. I definitely recommend it.

SECOND MOVIE REVIEW- The Incredible Hulk

This version was MUCH better than the 2005 version, though that's not saying much. Edward Norton was great, as always, though I didn't think the supporting cast performed as well as they could've, especially William Hurt. The action sequences were quite spectacular, and the scriot is pretty good as well. Another recommendation from moi.

TONY STUFFS

The Tony Awards are..(checks watch)...tomorrow, and it appears that I will actually be attending them this year. No, I wasn't nominated, but I feel it is my duty as a theatre fan, and a Scaryotype (an Official Fan of the musical "Passing Strange) to attend.

Here are my predictions as to the winners of the major categories. Actually, only the major musical categories. Sorry plays, I'm just too lazy this year. But I will say that August: Osage County is a lock for Best Play.

BEST ORCHESTRATIONS- I would LIKE for Stew and Heidi from "Passing Strange" to win this, but I feel like this one's going to "In The Heights." Though I also wouldn't mind if Jonathan Tunick won for "A Catered Affair.

BEST CHOREOGRAPHY- I think this one's the only award that "Cry-Baby" will be receiving. if not them, then "In the Heights."

BEST BOOK- Once again, I want Stew to win this, but I feel Douglas Carter Beane, of "Xanadu," deserves it much more.

BEST SCORE- I've heard all the nominated scores (as well as the "should've been nominated" Catered Affair score), and I would be fine with either "Heights," or "Strange" getting this. But Once again, I would much prefer a win for Stew and Heidi.

BEST DIRECTOR (MUSICAL)- Bartlett Sher of "South Pacific" will probably win, but I really would like for 89 year old Arthur Laurents of "Gypsy" to win. That production, was incredible.

BEST FEATURED ACTRESS- Um, her name is Laura Benanti. And she KNOWS she's getting this Tony. It's set in stone.

BEST FEATURED ACTOR- One of the most heated battles of the Tony's. Many people are saying Danny Burstein, for "South Pacific," though the actual battle is between Boyd Gaines of "Gypsy," and Daniel Breaker of "Passing Strange." In my humble opinion, this Tony HAS to go, to Mr. Breaker. He was i-i-incredible.

BEST ACTRESS- Uh, can I get a PATTI LUPONE...

PATTI LUPONE!!

BEST ACTOR- Everyone's saying Paulo Szot (pronounced like this) of "South Pacific" is gonna win. That's probably gonna be the case, but I'm rooting for Daniel Evans of "Sunday..."

BEST MUSICAL- Ooh, this category is all over the place. Some people say "Heights," others, "Strange," and some even say "Xanadu." (thank you Cubby Bernstein.) The most likely thing to happen is for "Heights" to win, but I'm really hoping that this prize goes to "Strange," though I would be fine with them not getting musical, and only getting Score.

I'll be back on Monday with a full Tony's report (I promise), and I also want to give a shout out to Scott Lehrer, nominated for Best Sound Design for "South Pacific." Best of luck to you!!

...the Passing Strange Cast Recording is released, via iTunes. Since this was, in my opinion, the best new show of the Broadway season, I am eagerly awaiting the release of this score, which is fantastic.

For those of you who haven't already, go see Passing Strange, and Adding Machine. Two amazing musicals!!!

Cubby Bernstein: I Smell a Tony...

It seems that Xanadu has found a genius marketing campaign, with the 9-year old 'Tony campaign manager," Cubby Bernstein.

Watch the videos, and you'll see this guy is the "real deal." Good luck with your campaign, Xanadu.

Meanwhile, I'll be campaigning for the the greatest new show this season, Passing Strange. I urge all readers to see this show as soon as possible, and all Tony voters to give this show a chance. It's that great!

I've been writing some screenplay, some regular plays, and other such things.

Over this break, I saw some awesome shows, (Passing Strange, again, Adding Machine, Gypsy) some awesome movies (Iron Man) and some awesome faces. (John Doyle, again, Stew, kinda but not really.)

We are back in business people. Fo shizzle

Speaking of which.

My only incentive to seeing "In the Heights," is to see some awesome Broadway-style rapping.

It is the most emotional new musical of the season. Not as good as Passing Strange, but that's just apples and oranges. Stand out performers in the show were Faith Prince, Tom Wopat, and Harvey Fierstein. Joh Doyle has once again directed an excellent show.

What comes to mind when you hear the name "William Finn?"

How about, crazy lyrics, Jewish and homosexual themes, and very addictive music? Yes, all of those things, and more even.

William Finn is an amazing composer, whose songs are both hilarious, and emotional. Finn has recently been represented on Broadway by the Tony-Winning musical "The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee." While not as good as his other shows, it was still with the visit.

Finn's first show was "In Trousers," the story of Marvin, an extremely confused man, when dealing with women. The show starts off with the zany song "Marvin's Giddy Seizures," so yeah, you know where this is going. But it's zany in a good way. And with an amazing cast, including, Chip Zien, and my favorite diva, Mary Testa.

He then went on to write "March of the Falsettos," and "Falsettoland," which were later combined into "Falsettos," which won the Tony Award for Best Score, and Best Book.

Other such works, like "A New Brain," and "Elegies," have furthered his greatness in the world of musical theatre.

What makes a good musical?

Well, various factors. The physical "look" of the show, the performers, the book. But the one thing that, in my opinion, makes or breaks a musical is, well, the music.

The real joy of a musical, the thing that makes it so wonderful, is the mere definition of what a musical is. In the majority, if not all, cases, a musical is a story, told through song. And if the music that is supposed to carry you through the performance is not good, or enjoyable, then, in my opinion, you have a very weak show.

Throughout the next few posts, I will be discussing some of the greatest composers of all time, while also talking about some composers that I don't like.

It should be known that I'm a very big fan of the "New School" of composers. In fact, there are not many B'way shows that are like that were produced in the theatre before 1970. The only "classic" composer I like is Ste... well, that will be discussed in a later post.

So, sit back, relax, and eat your potato chips, homeskillet. Cus' it's gonna be the ride of your life.

The Lack of Conflict In The Heights.

No, I haven't SEEN "In The Heights," the new musical about life for Latinos in Washington Heights. But, from what I hear, it's a very happy, positive, show, with a lot of energy, and such. But what I ALSO hear is that there is not really a conflict in the plot.

That's....not good.

Now, when I say conflict, I mean a REAL conflict, not like some minor plot element that seems negative to a character's motivation, if you get what I'm saying. In my opinion, if a show doesn't have a major conflict within itself, then, what direction is the show going to go in? You can't just have everything going well for the characters, and just have their accomplishments as the basis for the plot.

Hopefully, I'll get a chance to see "Heights," so I can bring some validity to this claim. Until then, speculation all around.....

Sunday In The Park With George... Again???

So, excitement for that, and hopefully, I'll get to see "Passing Strange" again.

-Awesome news for the always amazing Michael John Lachiusa. Apparently, he is not only writing a new musical called "Giant," but he is also apparently writing something for the Metropolitan Opera.

-I recently saw the Japanese animated film "Paprika."

Not so good.

So, "Is He Dead?," the critically acclaimed, and utterly hilarious, Mark Twain Play, is sadly closing, March 9th.

And once that closes, the also critically acclaimed Macbeth Revival, starring Patrick Stewart, is moving into the Lyceum, where "Is He Dead?" was situated.

And The Best Picture Is....

Yes, we all knew "No Country For Old Men" would win Best Picture, but I'm sure there were many people who didn't want it to win.

Me included.

Let's get this straight. "No Country" is an excellent movie. It really is. It's in my Top 5 of 2007, most definitely, but, it's not at #1. That spot belongs to the glorious epic that is "There Will Be Blood."

Also, "No Country" was getting ALL of the precursor awards, and when I say all, I mean a lot of them. In my opinion, I thought it was time for a change, but, shwatever, what can you do?

I'm not upset, I'm just saying, I would've preferred "Blood" to have won.

Also, Jon Stewart was a very good host.

I really should have picked the people who were actually going to WIN the Oscars, instead of who I WANTED to win. Here's my reaction to the winners....

BEST FOREIGN FILM- THE COUNTERFEITERS- Knew it was going to win. Didn't pick it. Don't know why.

ANIMATED SHORT- PETER AND THE WOLF- Exact same thing as above.

LIVE-ACTION SHORT- THE MOZART OF PICK-POCKETS- Um, shwatever.

DOCUMENTARY SHORT- FREEHELD- See above.

SOUND EDITING- THE BOURNE ULTIMATUM- No comment, that's it.

SOUND MIXING- THE BOURNE ULTIMATUM- Nice job with your sound, Bourne film.

MAKEUP- LA VIE EN ROSE- Of course.

F/X- THE GOLDEN COMPASS- I guess in the end, armored polar bears defeat transforming robots.

DOCUMENTARY- TAXI TO THE DARK SIDE- Yep.

COSTUMES- ELIZABETH: THE GOLDEN AGE- Way to go, Elizabethan times.

ART DIRECTION- SWEENEY TODD- This is freakin' awesome! Sweeney Todd is officially an Oscar-winning film!!!

CINEMATOGRAPHY- THERE WILL BE BLOOD- Not my choice, but glad to see "Blood" win more than one Oscar.

EDITING- THE BOURNE ULTIMATUM- Really? Really?

ORIGINAL SONG- FALLING SLOWLY- The only thing I really like about "Once," and thank goodness, it won an Oscar.

ORIGINAL SCORE- ATONEMENT- The parallels to "Babel" just keep getting more apparent!!

ANIMATED FILM- RATATOUILLE- Obvious, and of course, I didn't pick it.

ADAPTED SCREENPLAY- NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN- See above.

SUPPORTING ACTRESS- TILDA SWINTON- Yeah, for me, this came out of nowhere, but good for her.

Way better than "Atonement," and I fin it hard to compare to "Juno," since they are completely different films, but, "Clayton" would be my third choice to win the Oscar, right under "No Country," and "Blood."

The Wacky Circumference: Oscar Predictions!

Hold on to your hats, boys and girls. We're two days away from the biggest night ever. Even bigger than "Big Night '05."
After much thought, and deliberation, here are my predictions for all 24 categories of the 80th Annual Academy Awards...

DOCUMENTARY SHORT- Don't know, don't care.

LIVE ACTION SHORT- See above.

ANIMATED SHORT- So, I've seen all of the nominees for this category except for "I Met The Walrus," which is the one that I think is going to win. Crazy, no? Well, "Madame Tutli-Putli" has awesome animation, but is confusing as hell. Same goes for "My Love," times 1000. "Even Pigeons Go To Heaven" is moderately amusing, and "Peter and The Wolf" is awesome as well. If it were out of those four, I would say "Peter." But I've heard good things about "Walrus," so, we'll see.

SOUND EDITING- I ain't no sound editing expert, but since this is the only sound-related nomination that "There Will Be Blood" got, I'm going with them.

SOUND MIXING- Ratatouille?

F/X- "Transformers."They TRANSFORMED!! Many times, even!!!!

MAKEUP- Hells no, "Norbit" is not getting a freakin' Oscar, so, "La Vie En Rose."

DOCUMENTARY- Other than "The King of Kong," I haven't really seen any documentaries this year. But, let's just let Michael Moore have his cake, and eat it too, with "Sicko."

COSTUMES- "Sweeney Todd." Awesome film. Awesome costumes.

ART DIRECTION- See above.

CINEMATOGRAPHY- I loved the whole look of "The Diving Bell and The Butterfly," so, yeah, that one.

EDITING- Of the 3/4 of "Into The Wild" that I saw, the editing was very good, so, that.

ORIGINAL SONG- As much as I hated "Once," the song "Falling Slowly" was it's only highlight, so, I'm counting on that to win.

ORIGINAL SCORE- Can someone please tell me why the hell "There Will Be Blood" isn't here??? Shwatever, "Atonement"'s score was pretty good, but I also liked the score from "Ratatouille." Dun, Dun, Duuuuuuuuun.

FOREIGN FILM- I don't have such an extensve knowledge of the nominees, but I'm going with "Beaufort." Rock on Israel! Rock on!

ANIMATED FILM- Yeah, Yeah, I know. Ratatouille's awesome, there's no way it can't lose. Au contraire. "Persepolis" was an amazing film, that I believe could possibly upset the mighty Pixar rat!

ADAPTED SCREENPLAY- As cool as the "No Country," and "Blood" screenplays were, my money's on "Diving Bell."

ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY- J-U-N-O, what does that spell? I'm not even gonna tell you! Figure it out on your own!

SUPPORTING ACTRESS- No one is gonna mess with Cate Blanchett on Oscar night. Except in the leading actress category, She ain't got a chance there. But supporting? Hells yea!

SUPPORTING ACTOR- Oh come on! Who REALLY thinks Javier isn't going to win? No one, that's where.

ACTRESS- This one's up in the air. There's Julie Christie, the supposed front runner, Marion Cottilard, the other lead apparently, Ellen Page, the awesomest of awesome, Laura Linney, who might be the upsetter of all upsetters, and Cate Blanchett. It's a mystery to me.

ACTOR- If you have an Oscar, and I have an Oscar, and my performance is better than yours by a mile, I, WIN, YOUR OSCAR!!!!

I WIN IT UP!!!!

DIRECTOR- The Coen's are awesome, but Julian Schnabel directed the hell out of "Diving Bell," and he deserves to win for his outstanding achievement.

PICTURE- Um, crap, this is a toughy.

Sure, "No Country" is awesome, but that's too easy. Didn't we all think "Brokeback Mountain" was gonna win? I know I didn't. But the point is, Atonement was boring for the majority of the film, Juno is way to light to be awarded "Best Film of '07," I haven't freakin SEEN Michael Clayton yet, but I promise you, I will see it before Sunday, and No Country is just to obviousof a choice to pick, as weird as that sounds. This award belongs to the masterpiece of 2007. The film that is truly the best, that film being "There Will Be Blood."

Promoting the Best of Broadway!

You people out there who might be thinking that when you come to New York, you should go see "Wicked," or "The Little Mermaid." If you are reading this, I want you to know that you should NOT see those shows. There are far better shows on Broadway in my opinion, and I will be happy to promote those shows that everyone should be going to see rather than the big blockbusters you all think are so good....

IS HE DEAD?- A very funny play "written" by Mark Twain. It has a hilarious cast, and is worth the visit. It says that it is in it's "final weeks," but that could mean anything.

PASSING STRANGE- The most intelligent, rocking, new musical to hit Broadway in years. This really needs to build a big fan base, to support it through hard times. Come on guys, start your own group, like, I dunno, "The Passing Strangers," "The Stew Crew," something along those lines.

SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE- The most beautiful show on Broadway, from the greatest composer of all time, Stephen Sondheim. It is truly a work of art, this show. No pun intended there.

XANADU- The most fun you can have on Broadway. Period.

I really hope all you tourists visiting New York don't conform with the crowd, and instead, go see these shows. They really are worth seeing.

Imaginariums make the World go round....

So, "hit-and-miss" film director Terry Gilliam, is making this new film, "The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus."

Even the title creeps me out.
From the sound of it, it seems like a throw back to his old films, like "Baron Munchausen," and "Time Bandits." But there's one problem. Filming isn't finished, and the star of the film was Heath Ledger.

Yeah.

But get this. Apparently, within the world of the film, Ledger's character traveled to other dimensions, or some crazy crap like that. So, what they're now doing, which in my opinion is awesome, is they have three other actors, doing their own little tributes to Heath, playing his interdimensional characters.

But who are these Elite Three? None other than, Johnny Depp, Jude Law, and Colin Farrell.

Now, Johnny Depp is just plain awesome, so this will be cool. Jude Law is not bad either. And Colin, despite what people might think, is ok for what he is.

It's sort of a Heath Ledger version of "I'm Not There," except.... not.

Wicked cool, and such.

Passing Strange Review!

When shows like "Passing Strange" come along, the thought arises of, how is this show going to do financially? If we lived in a perfect universe, where good shows actually made money, then Passing Strange would make a hell of a lot of dough!

This show defies the conventions of what a rock musical can be. It takes you on a journey through the life of Youth, played by the brilliant Daniel Breaker, and how he tries to find "the real." He is surrounded by an amazing supporting cast, made up of de'Adre Aziza, Eisa Davis, Colman Domingo, Chad Goodridge, and Rebessa Naomi Jones.

The real star of the show is Stew, who wrote the book, lyrics, music with Heidi Rodewald, and he plays the role of the Narrator as well. He is able to carry us through this fantastic journey, which involves awesome songs, awesome lighting, and a really cool "light wall."

When you see this show, make sure you bring earplugs, because it is loud as HELL! But still, it's a great, original, new show, that will hopefully have a healthy run on the Great White Way.

Finally, David Spade does something funny!

This is a hilarious impression of Daniel Day-Lewis' performance in "There Will Be Blood," and I applaud you for that.

In sadder news, animator Ryan Larkin died of cancer this past Thursday. For those of you who don't know, Ryan Larkin was a Canadian animator, who created the Academy-Award nominated short film "Walking," and "Street Musique." He was also the subject of the recent animated short film "Ryan," which won the Oscar for Best Animated Film.

He will be missed.

R.I.P Ryan.

Shrek The Musical News!

If you told me a few years ago that "Shrek The Musical" was coming to Broadway, I would've laughed in your face. Now, I'm actually quite excited for it.

The NY Post reports that the score by Jeanine Tesori (of Caroline Or Change fame) "show off her musical intelligence." I'm pretty damn sure that's a compliment.

I'm just curious about who the hell is going to play Shrek and Donkey.

Time will tell.

If you want to see a Broadway Musical that is touching, beautiful, humorous, enchanting, tremendous, spectacular, well-acted, innovative, and flat-out remarkable, then why the hell are you going to see Legally Blonde The Musical??

You should be going to see the new revival of the Pulitzer-Prize winning Stephen Sondheim musical, "Sunday In The Park With George," based on the recent London Revival.

This production stars the original two actors from the London production, Daniel Evans as George, and Jenna Russell, as Dot. Both are amazing, and give stand-out performances. They are accompanied by an amazing supporting cast, including Ed Dixon, Alexander Gemignani, and Anne L. Nathan.

Since it is Sondheim, of course the music and lyrics are amazing, including what I think is the most beautiful song ever written, "Sunday."

Please, go see this show. The turnout was amazing actually, the theatre was basically full, which I find to be amazing, and I hoep this trend continues.

And I believe there are special $20 tickets for people between the ages of 18-35. So, that's awesome and such.

If you are able to really appreciate fine art, you will love this show!

Broadway Musicals in 2004. As the documentary "Show Business" shows us, it was an amazing year for theatre.

CAROLINE, OR CHANGE
WICKED

These were three very important musicals.

Wicked is the big, overblown, blockbuster musical. Not saying it's bad. Not saying it's good. It's basically a live action Disney movie, which kind of makes sense, since it has a score by Disney regular Stephen Schwartz. It has become the highest-grossing show on Broadway currently, and has unfortunately bred a new generation of little girlie theatre fans.

Avenue Q is the little show that could. Goin up against the "Wicked" Juggernaut, it managed to win Best Score and Best Musical at the Tony's. And it's a great show, with a good heart. And puppets!!! Who doesn't love puppets?

And Caroline, Or Change. For those of you who are not familiar with this show, Caroline, Or Change is the underrated, amazing musical from the minds of Tony Kushner and Jeanine Tesori. I usually call this a "play set to music," rather than a musical, because it's not really like a "conventional" musical, because nothing really happens. But it's still amazing.

Persepolis Movie Review

I read the biographical graphic novel that the film "Persepolis" is based on. I found it to be an amazing read, and I was very curious as to what the results would be for the film adaptation.

Let's just say, it was amazing!

This film not only has various points of hilarity, but also many points of gripping drama, and the beautiful hand-drawn animation is a great example of how computer animation is still not the domineering form of animation.

Many people believe that "Ratatouille" has the Best Animated Feature Oscar in the bag, but on Oscar night, I'm hoping that "Persepolis" gets the award instead.

Jerry Springer: The Opera: In Concert at Carnegie Hall

I have seen the English DVD of "Jerry Springer The Opera." And I have listened to the Cast Recording, various times. I love this show. Like, A LOT.

So, when I heard I was going to see it at Carnegie Hall, i was ecstatic!!

Was the show good?
Of course.

David Bedella, as the Warm-Up Man/Satan, was the best in the cast, and it was an amazing cast!!

But Harvey Keitel, as Jerry Springer?
Not so much.

He wasn't as good as preceding Jerrys, and he seemed to just non-nonchalantly stroll through the show, not really adding anything to it.

Shwatever, good show overall.

Hopefully it will transfer to B'Way, with a different leading man.

Oh, and there were PROTESTERS!!!

Now, everyone knows that this should go to the fabulous Javier Bardem, for his chilling performance as Anton Chigurh in "No Country For Old Men." But you never know. Maybe Casey Affleck will get it, or even P.S.H.

We'll see, but the lead is Javier.

What the F**k is wrong with you?!?!?!

"Scary Movie" is ok. "Date Movie" and "Epic Movie" were horrible. Why in God's name would you make "Meet The Spartans??"
Your target audience for this film is mentally challenged people. I've seen the commercials. I can see what your crap style of comedy is. You have a bad Sylvester Stallone impressionist, who says the line "Say hello to my little friend," from the Al Pacino movie, "Scarface." And I thought to myself when I first saw that commercial, "Oh they better not bring out a midget to be his 'little friend'." And guess what? YOU DID!

And although for some retarded reason, it's the number one movie at the box office this weekend, in my opinion, movies should not be made for money. Sure, it's great to make money, but you need an artistic vision for a film that you believe in, not just a piece of crap that you think will appeal to every idiot in the country. Go see the movie "Ed Wood," and you'll know what I'm talking about.

Here are my last words of advice: if you want to make a movie, make sure that it is good, comedy wise, and that it doesn't cost less than $20.

First off, I'm very happy for Laura Linney's surprise nomination for "The Savages." But unfortunately, she isn't going to win.

The race is between Julie Christie, Marion Cottilard, and Ellen Page.

Now, I really, REALLY, want Ellen to win. She was so good in "Juno," and I think it would be awesome if she got the award. Christie and Cottilard are the two actresses who everyone thinks is going to win.

I haven't seen either of their performance, but for me, it's gotta be Page.

Daniel Day-Lewis is just Amazing, with a capital A! the whole look, and feel of this movie is fantastic. And, the score, is just amazing. And it's written by Johnny Greenwood, from Radiohead.

So, England was awesome!!

Now, I'm back in the states, and a whole lot of (expletive deleted) is going on.

Heath Ledger, the unending writer's strike, and of course, the Oscars.

In my opinion, 2007 was one of the best years for film in my lifespan as of now. If I were to make a Top 10 list, it would be impossible, because there were soo many equally awesome films.

I am perfectly satisfied with the nominations, kinda. There will be ten continuing posts which will each discuss an aspect of the nominations.

BEST PICTURE

For those of you who don't know, the nominees are

ATONEMENT
JUNO
MICHAEL CLAYTON
NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN
THERE WILL BE BLOOD

Now, I'm seeing "Blood" on Saturday night, and hopefully "Clayton" will come to DVD or something before the Oscars.

"Juno" rocks, as does "No Country."

Now, everyone was wondering what the fifth spot was going to. It went to "Atonement." And, Ta-Da! I finally saw it on the plane ride back to the States, and let me tell you, there were far more deserving films that could've taken that coveted fifth spot.

I'm not saying it's a bad film. Of course not. The beginning was quite interesting, but the middle hour, that focused on the war, was very, and I mean, VERY, boring. Not interesting at all.

But there was hope, yes, hope indeed. For when there was just 20 minutes left, Vanessa Redgrave appears as "Old" Briony, and the film created an ending that blew me away, with tremendous performances, and twists coming from every corner. Yes, so depressingly amazing, that it saved this film from entering the same category that contains "American Gangster," that category being, "Most Overrated Film of 2007."

But even with this ending, this film does not deserve to take this spot. There were far more deserving films, such as...

THE DIVING BELL AND THE BUTTERFLY
INTO THE WILD
BEFORE THE DEVIL KNOW YOU'RE DEAD
THE DARJEELING LIMITED

Yes, that's only five, but still.
And yes, while the film is brilliant, technical-wise, and has an amazing score, in my opinion, it will be a great injustice if it wins Best Picture.

Merrily We Roll Along: John Doyle Watermill Production!!

I had the honour of meeting John Doyle, the Tony-Winning Director of Sweeney Todd, and of tonight's show, Merrily We Roll Along.

To put it lightly, it Freakin' Rocked!!!

All of the performers were outstanding, with the actor playing Frank as a standout.

For the record, John Doyle is an awesome director. And I'm not just saying that because I met him, but because it's true. He is so innovative, and I always find his staging to be so dark, in a good way, if that makes sense, which it should. And the whole "actors as the orchestra" thing is quite awesome.

I advise anyone in England to see this production as soon as possible, cus' it's amazing!!!!

Oscar Predictions!!!

Yes, I know that's a picture of Oskar Kokoshka, but still, that's a cool Oscar, and so are these Oscars, as in, the Academy Awards, which will be announced in two days, the nominations I mean. Here are my predictions for the nominees....

BEST PICTURE

So, "No Country" has a nomination in the bag, but there is some confusion over what will be the other 4 nominees. Some people are in favor of "Michael Clayton" and "Into the Wild." However, I am in favor of "Diving Bell" and "Atonement." As for the other two spots, they're gonna go to "There Will Be Blood," and my personal favorite, "Sweeney Todd."

BEST DIRECTOR

This is also a very competitive category. In my opinion, two of the spots are already held by The Coen Bros., and Julian Schnabel. As for the other three, let's say, Paul T. Anderson, Sidney Lumet, and Tim Burton.

BEST ACTOR

Well, of course Mr D.D-Lewis has a spot, as does, in my opinion, Johnny Depp. the other three spots will go/should go to, George Clooney, Viggo Mortensen, and Emile Hirsch.

BEST ACTRESS

As with the previous category, there is another person who has a definite spot, in this case, Julie Christie. And I do believe the Academy will include young actress Ellen Page as well. Golden Globe winner Marion Cottilard will probably also get a nod, with the 4th spot going to Angelina Jolie. And just for fun, let's put Helena Bonham Carter in the mix.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR

Why must every category have an obvious candidate? I'm talking to you, Javier Bardem. Rounding out this category is Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Tom Wilkinson, Hal Holbrook, and Paul Dano.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS

Now come one Academy, you know you can't reject a female Bob Dylan, aka Cate Blanchett. Or a bitchy 12 year old girl, aka Saiorse Ronan. The other three spaces, Amy Ryan, Tilda Swinton, and (sure why not?) Marisa Tomei.

Well, it's quarter to 6 am in NY, but on the other side of the pond, it's good ol' quarter to 11 am.

So, I just got to England, along with my colleague, Sam Habafriar, and the flat we're staying in is pretty nice.
On the plane, I watched the last 30 minutes of "Eastern Promises," which was just enough to see that Viggo Mortensen is awesome.

I also watched "Run Fatboy Run," which was pretty awesome as well.

The Lives Of Other: An Essay about Injustice.

So, The BAFTA Nominations were announced, which are like, the British Oscars. So, Sweeney essentially got shut out, but shwatever.

Now, here are the nominees for Best Picture..

Now, first off, American Gangster has no business being there. It's not a good film, and I hope the Academy does not recognize it, at least not in this category.

Now we get to the real business. The Lives of Others. This film has been nothing but trouble ever since it was released. In my opinion, it was Pan's Labyrinth. And now, it's nominated for Best Picture here, AND Best Film in a Foreign Language. What is this, the Critic's Choice Awards???

And, Ulrich Mohe, from said film, is nominated for Best Leading Actor, basically stealing Johnny Depp's spot.

Apparently, the film came out in Germany March 23, 2006. Therefore, it won the Oscar for Best Foreign Film. I'm assuming that the deadline for the film is for it's release in the home country, not in the U.S.

It was released in America February 9, 2007. It is not eligible for the Oscars this year, yet it is still on people's Top Films of the Year lists. It's true.

It was released in England April 11 2007. If the same rules apply for foreign films for the Oscars, why not the BAFTA'S? I'm not against foreign films being nominated for Best Picture. Hell, I think "The Diving Bell and The Butterfly" should be nominated this year. But this film came out two years ago. There is no reason for this nomination, which could've gone to a better film, like Diving Bell, or Sweeney.

Will Ferrell might be bringing a "Fame Becomes Me"-esque, one-man show to Broadway. While some people think that he is just really stupid, I think that's why Will is so funny. He's so amazing at playing stupid characters, like Ron Burgundy, and Mugatu. So, I will be very excited for this.

-The Grey Gardens composers are writing "Finding Neverland: The Musical." Yay?

Tomorrow evening, the 16th, I will be going on an important trip to my homeland of Great Britain. I will be traveling with my fellow CFA Committee member, and fellow entertainment-man, Sam Habafriar.

During this epic week, we will report on the Oscar Nominations, being announced on Tuesday 22nd. We will also report on the new John Doyle production of the Stephen Sondheim musical, "Merrily We Roll Along," which employs the whole "actors playing instruments thing." More details will be supplied throughout the week.

- The hilarious comedy group DERRICK Comedy is, according to their website, making a feature length film! This should be awesome.

Family Guy: How Low Can You Go? Very, Apparently...

Ahh, Family Guy, the once good show has fallen so far from it's absurdingly hilarious roots. But now, due to horrible animation, bad story structure, and terrible dialogue, Family Guy has become one of the worst shows on television.

Now usually, I wouldn't just rant about Family Guy on the blogosphere, but last night's episode went too far.

In the episode, titled "McStroke," Peter grows a mustache (because he saw it in a magazine????) and then witnesses the local Burger restaurant on fire. The firemen get him to try and save the fire (because he has a mustache?????) and he saves the owner of the restaurant, at the loss of his mustache. (which he doesn't think can grow back?????) Because of this, he gets unlimited hamburgers, and after eating thirty of them, has a stroke.

Now, here, my friends, is where the episode takes a turn for the worst. And i mean THE WORST. So, Peter is now paralyzed on the left side of his body, and the beautiful animation (that is sarcasm) depicts him in the most grotesque way. Not saying that he should look like Prince Charming, but it still looked horrible.

Also, after recently seeing "Diving Bell," I have seen what it is like to be in that sort of condition. And I know, Peter's "condition" wasn't as extreme as the case in the movie, but still, bad taste.

Then they go on to show Peter in "humorous" situations due to his condition, examples include, Peter trying to drink beer, and it pouring out of his paralyzed mouth, and Peter trying to drive, and his dead arm being caught in the door.

Now come on Family Guy. Have you sunk so far that you can't even stay in good taste?

If you want to make fun of something, make sure it's in good taste, and it's actually FUNNY!

B'way Update!

I know that we're in the midst of film awards season, but I kinda feel bad that I haven't done any major recent posts about theatre, and B'way. So, for your reading pleasure, I present a look at the shows coming to Broadway in the current 07-08 season;

THE 39 STEPS: I hear it's some humorous adaptation of the famous Alfred Hitchcock film. Unless I'm really bored one day, you won't catch me there.

NOVEMBER: I love David Mamet. I love Nathan Lane. Count me in fro this new presidential comedic play!

COME BACK, LITTLE SHEBA: Yeah, it's the whole, "not such a fan of plays unless they sound really good, or if they look really funny" thing, that's stopping me from seeing this.

SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE: The first Broadway revival of the Pulitzer-Prize winning Stephen Sondheim musical, from the Olivier-Award winning London production. Awesomeness at it's finest.

PASSING STRANGE: An Off-Broadway musical transfer, about the story of a musician. Well, it was written by, and starring, a guy named Stew, and it received critical acclaim Off-Broadway, so, what the hell, I'm ready for something new, ain't you?

CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF: A revival of the classic Tennessee Williams play. And it just happens to have a bunch of famous African-American Actors in it. Maybe....

IN THE HEIGHTS: Another Off'-B'way transfer, this one about Latino's, or something along those lines. I'll probably end up seeing it.

GYPSY: The new revival of the classic American Musical, based on the recent City Center Encores! Production, with Ultra-Diva, Patti LuPone. I'm gonna see it, but I don't really like the poster. It's all, bleh.

SOUTH PACIFIC: As some of you don't know, I find Rogers & Hammerstein to be a tad overrated. So, I won't be attending this Pulitzer-Prize winning musical.

A CATERED AFFAIR: A new musical from composer John Bucchino, based on the '50s film, with a book by, and starring, Harvey Fierstein, this looks like the big dramatic hit of the season.

and, Thurgood, a play with Lawrence Fishburne.

CRITICS CHOICE AWARD WINNERS:

BEST DOCUMENTARY- Good for you Michael Moore, you big sack of crap. Now run along, and go and continue hating America.

BEST COMPOSER- Told you guys. Jonny Greenwoods creepy score won. Creepy always wins. Always.

BEST SONG- "Falling Slowly" is beautiful, and it won. I am a great guesser.

BEST FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM- "Diving Bell" rocks in the face. More on that later.

BEST TV MOVIE- Something won. I don't care. Life goes on.

BEST FAMILY FILM- "Enchanted" eh? Yeah, I got nothing.

BEST COMEDY- Fine then, don't go with the CFA'S, but you'll be sorry.

BEST YOUNG ACTRESS- Nikki Blonsky, um, yeah fine.

BEST YOUNG ACTOR- All those who for some reason can't tolerate bad language, don't read the following. (Clears throat.) Fuck you, Kite Runner Kid.

BEST ANIMATED FEATURE- It's pronounced, "obviousness." Ratatouille won for those who don't know.

BEST WRITER- Yeah, Diablo's pretty rockin'.

BEST DIRECTOR- Well, it wasn't your face, but it was the Coen Bro's. Yes.

BEST ACTING ENSEMBLE- Will Sweeney get no justice???

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS- Amy Ryan, shwatever.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR- Javier. Nice

BEST ACTRESS- Wait, why aren't you guys doin' the Ellen Page dance? No, don't you dare go do the Julie Christie dance. No, NOOOO!!!! Shit.

BEST ACTOR- Daniel Day-Lewis.

BEST PICTURE- No Country For Old Awesome is it's "real title," am I right?

Next....

Walk Hard Rocks.

As does this other crazy film I just saw called "Interstella 5555." Don't ask.

I saw Diving Bell the other night. Freakin' Awesome. It's quite possible to win Best Picture.

And "The Seafarer" is quite good.

You can now see how this is affecting Hollywood. Resume negotiations, and come to a compromise already!

I'm not against their right to strike, I'm against the fact that they should take into account the vast affect this is having on the entertainment industry, that's all.

If I don't have my facts straight, please inform me.

The Wacky Circumference: Critics Choice Awards Update!!!

Tomorrow, The 13th Annual Critics Choice Awards air on VH1, (Yeah, random right?) and I believe it's the first of the major awards shows broadcast on television.

Here are some of my predictions for who should, and will, win.

BEST DOCUMENTARY- I've heard good things about "The King of Kong," but it will probably go to "Sicko," or "No End in Sight."

BEST COMPOSER- Too bad Stephen Sondheim isn't allowed to be nominated, but Greenwood's score for "There Will Be Blood," is equally as creepy.

BEST SONG- Although I hated "Once," the nominated song, "Falling Slowly," is quite beautiful.

BEST FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM- Some very strong nominees in this category, but I think it's between "Diving Bell," and "4 Months."

BEST PICTURE MADE FOR TELEVISION- "Tin Man?"

BEST FAMILY FILM- This category doesn't make sense. Everyone knows that family films suck. Fine then, "Hairspray" it is.

BEST COMEDY- Wait, "Hairspray" is nominated for Best Comedy as well??? That's just gay, but it doesn't matter, because this award is going to CFA Winner "Superbad." Or "Juno," which is also nominated for Best Picture? Get your shit together Critics Choice Awards.

BEST YOUNG ACTRESS- Um, no.

BEST YOUNG ACTOR- If this doesn't go to Edward Sanders, for his chilling performance in "Sweeney Todd," someone will be hurt. You better watch yourself Freddie Highmore.....

BEST ANIMATED FEATURE- "Persepolis," or "Ratatouille." That is the question.

BEST WRITER- I would like this to go to Diablo Cody for "Juno," but it will most likely go to the Coen Bro's, for "No Country."

BEST DIRECTOR- Here's where it gets messy. Tim Burton rocks, so I would want him to win. Sidney Lumet is 83, or something, and was able to direct a kick-ass awesome movie. And the Coen Bro's, well they're just amazing at life. So who will it be? Um, your face?

BEST ACTING ENSEMBLE- All together now. S-W-E-E-N-E-Y T-O-D-D.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS- If a woman doesn't get recognition for playing Bob Dylan, then we might as well give the Oscar for Best Picture to "Norbit."

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR- Sorry P.S.H, your awesomeness will have to slide this time. Javier's got it in the bag.

BEST ACTRESS- Do the Ellen Page Dance.

Do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do.

BEST ACTOR- On the one hand, Daniel Day-Lewis is the finest actor of this generation, and his methods of acting cannot be matched, and his performance has been critically acclaimed across the land. On the other hand, Johnny Depp.
This is a tough one.

BEST PICTURE- So, there are 10 nominees, (What the fudge!) but here are the ones that actually are good, and have a chance of winning:

The Diving Bell and the Butterfly
Juno
No Country For Old Men

There Will Be Blood

Wait, that equals five. the number of nominees you usually have! What the hell are these other 5 doing here!!!!

So, I would be happy if any of these five won, preferably the bottom three.

I just saw "The Glorious Ones," a new musical from Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty, and I must say that it is, sorry for the pun, glorious!!!

All of the cast is fantastic in their own way. That goes double for the amazingly amazing Marc Kudisch, who I was able to meet after the show!!!!!!

I think it closes in January, so it would be wise to see it soon.

Also, Happy Kwanzaa!!

With the SITFA's in two days, and the CFA's in January, it seems that awards season is clearly looming over us all.

Plus of course, the "real" awards, like the SAG's, the Golden Globes, the Critics Choice Awards, and the coveted Oscars!!

So, starting December 27th, a new segment will be used, to cover these various film awards.

It will be known as;

Sweeney Todd Review!!!!

It has finally arrived!!!

The movie 28 years in the making, and just how good is "Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street," you ask?

Very.

Just like the majority of film critics have already said, this is Tim Burton's best film since "Ed Wood." Possibly better? That's a discussion for another time.
Johnny Depp. Scary as hell. Amazing, creepy, just about every adjective you can use to describe his awesomeness. He brings a new level of terror to Sweeney that I have never seen before. He will hopefully be a big contender for this year's Best Actor Oscar.
Helena Bonham Carter. Very nice as well. She does what she can with the character, and is quite successful in doing so. By the Sea was probably the funniest of the comical sequences in the film. It's just that her singing voice, is a bit too light for me.
Alan Rickman. A stellar performance, to say the least. Quite creepy, and cool and such.
Timothy Spall. Bad teeth. Good performance.
Jamie Campbell Bower and Jayne Wisener were both good as Anthony and Johanna, respectively.
Laura Michelle Kelly also was good as the beggar woman.
Edward Sanders gave a chillingly creepy performance as Tobias.
And of course, Sacha Baron Cohen was hilarious in his role of Pirelli.

The film's ending is probably the creepiest ending to a film I've seen in years.
I hope this makes alot of money in its run.
At least it has gained near critical acclaim.
And hopefully gain alot of Awards/nominations.

The American Film Institute has released their list of the Top 10 Films and TV Shows of 2007.

I'm a bit baffled by the absence of "Sweeney Todd" from the list, but the list says that they are the most influential films of the year, so whatever.

At least "American Gangster" and "Atonement" didn't make the list.

-Tomorrow, the Soundtrack to the Sweeney Todd Movie is released. Oh, how thrilling!!

-Does anyone know what's happening with the Writer's Strike? I would really like some updates on this, and such....

-In movie news, "The Golden Compass" will probably be a box office flop, from the looks of it.

-Some friends of mine said they would rather see "Alvin and the Chipmunks," than "Sweeney Todd."

Juno Review

Her sisters name is Liberty Bell.
Her best friend is addicted to orange Tic Tacs.
And, she's a sixteen year old pregnant high school student.

This is Juno, star of the best comedy of the year, which is also "Juno."

Actually, the film has two stars, actress Ellen Page, and screenwriter Diablo Cody. Both are the reason why I, and hopefully all moviegoers, loved this film. She uses such fresh, and hip dialogue, that is both humorous and truthful. And Page is definitely deserving of the Oscar Buzz she is receiving.
And of course, the supporting cast is phenomenal. Michael Cera as Juno's impregnator (is that a word,) is magnificent, and J.K Simmons is quite hilarious as Juno's father.

This film is hilarious, and has a great heart, and I could see this being a big Oscar contender.

-Also, congrats to Tim Tebow, for winning the Heisman Trophy.
I saw him.
In person.
In the city.
Surrounded by screaming fans and papparazzi.
I had no idea who he was.
But then I heard people talking about him.

Is He Dead? Review

Mark Twain's back!!

With a Vengeance!!!!

Just kidding, but seriously, Samuel Clemens new play "Is He Dead?" is probably the funniest play on Broadway at the moment.
Every member of the cast is fantastic, with stand out performances from Norbert Leo Butz, and Michael McGrath.
I must say that one of the best parts of the show was the spectacular set! It has a cool "forced perspective" design, and it goes under a dramatic change during the intermission, with literally put the audience in awe, That's right, they applauded the set! And that's pretty rockin'!

Now that "The Ritz" is closing on Sunday, I think that "Is He Dead?" will be the only comedic play on Broadway. Think of it as "The Xanadu of Plays."

Don't go in there thinking its a serious drama, because it's not. At All.
No.

But you should still go see this masterpiece of a farce.

Do it.

How the Grinch Stole Christmas Review!

Well, its December, and Christmas has officially begun. Every TV show has to do with the yuletide season, and even some movies. But Broadway only has one Christmas themed show.

And what a show it is!!!

All Families out there who want a great holiday show to go to, look no further! This is the second time I've seen this show, I saw it last year as well. But I must say that it was MUCH better this year!!

Patrick Page is just a great ball of talent, and is a perfect Grinch! Ed Nixon, who played Old max the Dog, was far more convincing of this role then John Cullum, who occupied the role last year. And also back from last year is Rusty Ross, once again is excellent as Young Max.

The child ensemble cast is outstanding, as well as the adult ensemble. This show not only has a lovely heart, but has one of the most underrated scores on Broadway.

So, see the Grinch, while you still can!!

And the award for "Creepiest Actor of All Time" goes to...

"drum roll"

Javier Bardem, for his portrayal of Anton Chigurh, in "No Country For Old Men," one of the best films of 2007.

After seeing the disaster that was "American Gangster," it's such a relief to see such a thrilling, masterpiece like this. The whole way through watching this movie, I was entralled by the amazing performances of Tommy Lee Jones, Josh Brolin, and creepy-as-hell Javier Bardem. I could see this being nominated, for and possibly winning, various Oscars.

And remember;

Stay away from American Gangsters. They just might steal 2 and a half hours of your life.

American Gangster Review

About one year ago, there was a movie that was released, with big name celebrities, a famous director, and moderately good critical acclaim. I saw that movie, and it was forever placed into my bottom five of "Worst Movies Ever."

That movie was "Babel," and now, in November 2007, I'm feeling a bit of deja vu.

Before the writing of this review, I have looked at various other reviews from such sources as the NY Times, and Ebert and Roeper, and it has become apparent that the only way that they could have given these reviews is that they saw a different movie. They keep talking about all these deeper messages that they were gathering from the movie, and to be frank, none of that was clear in the movie.
Not to be arrogant, but I'm not a stupid person. Some sort of deeper message in the movie couldn't just fly above my head like that. What I saw, was two and a half hours of boredom, boredom, naked black chicks, a bit more boredom, boredom, a cameo by "Young Frankenstein" star Roger Bart, a moderately interesting shooting scene, boredom, and finally, a bad ending.

You can bash me all you want, movie lovers, but I am telling you all;

American Gangster is the 3rd worst movie EVER!!

Right above Babel, and Mr. Woodcock.
